The Reason I'm Recommitting to My Health ... and You Should Too
Why do we do it? Make all these healthy choices that seem counterintuitive to what we've been taught? Bypass things we enjoy? Make choices that aren't always easy?

I'll admit, it sometimes seems like there's little benefit.

But I received a really big reminder a few weeks ago of why it is all absolutely worth it.

After a month of getting lost in the process of renovating our new house and moving in, in the three weeks I lived without a functional kitchen, I received a really harsh reminder.

I had not been drinking water like I should, and I blamed it on my Berkey water filter being packed away. I had been eating out too much and choosing drive-through too often, and I blamed it on being busy with the house or my kitchen being in boxes. I stopped taking my supplements, and I blamed it on them being packed up.

I basically stopped doing everything I knew I needed to, thinking I could get away with it for just a little longer.

And my body finally said, "Enough!" It warned me. I was mildly sick a couple days early in the week, and though I said I'd make changes, I didn't. After I ignored that warning shot, the real hit came. I spent an entire night in the bathroom with the worst digestive issues I've ever experienced and most of the rest of the day in bed recovering. The following day, I was bed-ridden again with my first migraine in probably five years.

After a bit of research, I believe I had a gallbladder attack of some sort, and that scared me. This is an organ that modern medicine doesn't think twice about removing but functional medicine knows to be crucial. I know people who've had their gallbladders removed, and they don't find it to be an excess body part that they didn't need.

Long story short –  those small things we do every day actually have a big impact, but we tend not to notice until it all derails. It's human nature to not notice when things are going well, only when they aren't.

After all this, I'm recommitting ... not only to healthy choices but to this blog as well. I hope it can help you as much as it keeps me motivated.

I'd like to encourage you to learn from my lesson. Don't neglect your health until it's too late. Don't wait for a problem. Don't wait to get sick. Don't wait for a diagnosis. Do the work now to maintain your health.

Start small if you need to. What one step can you commit to making a habit that will be a positive step for your health?

Meet Melissa Denelsbeck

For years, I was trapped in a fog, never feeling 100%, always tired but too stressed out to get a good night’s sleep, struggling through headaches 3-4 times each week. Almost every afternoon at work, I would hit that mid-afternoon slump and be unable to keep my eyes open. Often, my headaches would start around this same time and last through the rest of the day. All I wanted to do was go home and sleep, but when I went to bed, my thoughts would race, and I wouldn’t be able to fall asleep.

I felt like I was stuck in a never-ending cycle of fatigue – tired all day and wide awake at night, and the headaches just made it all more difficult to deal with. I pushed on as well as I could through the sleepiness and the pain, but I never felt like I was functioning at full capacity.

Then, I started making some changes in my life and becoming aware of what I was putting in and on my body. Over time, I realized that my headaches were becoming less frequent, and my sleep quality, energy, and mental clarity were improving.

Now, a couple years later, I feel my energy levels remain steady from the time I wake up until I go to bed. I am able to quiet my anxious thoughts and fall asleep quickly at night. And the headaches? They’re so infrequent that I can’t even say how often they come – maybe 3-5 a year?

It wasn’t even that difficult a change to make. I just swapped out products in my life that were contributing to my bad health, and I replaced them with versions that enhance my wellness instead.

It’s a step-by-step process that you can take at your own pace, and I am here to be your guide on the journey and empower you to take back your own health!
