Perfume and cologne have been one of the most difficult items to find natural options for. Artificial fragrance is toxic, and obviously, these items are made up primarily of artificial fragrance. Natural options included DIY perfumes or roll-on scents made with essential oils, but personally, I never found that they lasted more than a few minutes. It makes sense since they are so readily absorbed by the skin, but that didn't help those of us who wanted a scent that lasted.
So I was extremely excited this spring when I finally discovered truly natural fragrance that lasts.
What is Wyld Notes?
Wyld Notes is a brand-new company launched this spring. Its only product is all-natural fragrances – five currently but with more to come – that use plant extracts, essential oils, and plant-based absolutes with a base of organic non-denatured sugarcane alcohol. Fun fact: Alcohol is typically denatured with toxic chemicals, so using non-denatured alcohol is essential for a natural fragrance.
The company is completely transparent about its ingredients. You won't find the blanket term "fragrance" on its labels like other companies use to cover up a multitude of toxins.
Additionally, the company prioritizes sustainable sourcing and regenerative farming methods to ensure it cares for the earth as much as our health.
Scents
Currently, Wyld Notes offers five very diverse scents as well as a discovery set that lets you try samples of each to choose your favorite.
Fireside Citrus
I'll be honest. Fireside Citrus is my least favorite of the five. Not because it doesn't smell good – it does! But I feel like it's the least noticeable and lasts the shortest amount of time. That said, it is a delightful citrus scent with a hint of complexity and smokiness.
It would work for both men and women.
I like to layer it with Timeless Floral or Sweet Decadence.
Timeless Floral
This is not your grandma's floral perfume! Timeless Floral has such an elegance and depth, without any of the sickeningly perfume-y-ness of most floral fragrances. It smells almost creamy somehow. Also, of the five scents, I feel like this one lasts the longest.
Personally, I would say this one is a woman's scent.
I usually wear it alone, but it also layers well with Fireside Citrus or Smokey Ember.
Smokey Ember
Smokey Ember is probably the most complex of the five scents, and I wasn't sure if I'd like it, but I do! I was leery of the juniper top note, but it also has black spruce as a base note, and that is one of my all-time favorite scents. It's definitely smoky but not overwhelmingly so and has a warm, adventurous feel to it. I wore this the other day, and my husband commented on how good I smelled.
This scent is probably my favorite of the five for a man's scent.
It is a great base to layer with Timeless Floral if you want to feminize it a little.
Sweet Decadence
I would describe Sweet Decadence as a cross between a tropical island and a luscious bakery. It smalle like vanilla, coconut, pistachio, and a delightfully light sweetness. This one is also better suited for women than men, in my opinion.
I like to layer it with Fireside Citrus.
Rugged Wilderness
It's an outdoorsy aroma, and the lavender definitely comes through, but it's lavender the herb, not lavender of overly flowery lavender-scented products. It's very earthy and smells like you're standing in a lavender field while someone bales hay in the next field.
I usually wear this one alone, but it also blends well with Fireside Citrus, or you could combine it with Smokey Ember if you wanted to make it more manly.
How Long They Last
I feel like the Timeless Floral scent lasts the longest per application. I've noticed whiffs of it several hours after putting it on. Fireside Citrus lasts the shortest time I feel, with the others falling somewhere in between.
The day after applying all these scents to different areas of my arms, so I could describe them for this blog, I can still smell Sweet Decadence strongly on my skin and Timeless Floral very slightly.
Pro tip: I don't spray these perfumes only on my skin. I aim to hit my neck/collarbone area along with my hair and my shirt. The fabric holds the scent the longest, and I've noticed it still on clothing the next time I wear that shirt. However, it doesn't persist through washing like artificial fragrances often do.
As to how much mileage you'll get from a bottle, I haven't bought a full-size bottle yet, and I don't wear fragrance every day – maybe 1/3 to 1/2 of the time, but I was amazed that my first discovery set has lasted me a solid three months. Since the set has a total of 7.5 ml between the five vials, I imagine that a full-size 50 ml bottle would last me well over a year.
Personal Thoughts
I am somewhat fussy with scents. There are some – like juniper and lemongrass – that I just can't stand. I was a little unsure when I saw the plants included in some of the Wyld Notes scents. Three of the five really interested me, and a fourth I was curious to smell. For that reason, I bought the discovery set, so I could see which ones I really liked before investing in a whole bottle.
What I discovered on my first test truly surprised me. I liked them ALL! Even Timeless Floral – the one scent I had no interest in and NEVER would have bought! It's now the one I intend on buying a full bottle of first.
My Recommendation
If you're interested in trying Wyld Notes for yourself, I definitely recommend getting the Discovery Set first. As I stated, the scents were all different from what I expected, and the kit will let you decide which one is right for you. Also, the kit comes with a discount on the first full bottle you purchase, so it's a win-win!
Also-also, they're a great travel size, so I plan to always keep a set on-hand for that purpose!
